Three photo prints from Arielle Twist's photo series “ASTAM” (2019). “ASTAM” was created during the exhibition Poems For Impending Doom at the Centre For Art Tapes in 2019 and the photos from the series have since been exhibited in shows at Agnes Etherington Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, and the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art. Photos have also been used as the cover photo of issue 37.1 of BlackFlash Magazine in 2020. “ASTAM” was Twist's debut in the realm of visual creation; starting her practice as a poet and author, “ASTAM” was the project that led her to a career into Interdisciplinary Arts. Created in 2019, and printed in 2022.

Artist Bio:
Arielle Twist’s (b. 1994, George Gordon First Nation and Sipekne'katik First Nation, Cree) interdisciplinary practice blends poetics and visual modes of creation to explore the realities and legacy of Indigenous and Trans* life and grief. Exploring and experimenting through mediums such as textiles, painting, performance, literature and language, Twist is reconnecting with the legacy of Indigenous Trans matriarchy and womanhood. Recent exhibitions include Indian Theater: Native Performance, Art, and Self Determination since 1969, Hessle Museum of Art, New York; Indigenous Joys, Neutral Ground, Saskatchewan; Time As A Relative, Alternator Kelowna, British Columbia; Twist has received awards from Writers Trust of Canada, Indigenous Voices Awards, Arts Nova Scotia for her debut poetry collection Disintegrate/Dissociate (2019, Arsenal Pulp Press).
