OUT: Queer Looking Queer Acting Revisited
OUT: Queer Looking Queer Acting Revisited is edited by noted curator and activist, Robin Metcalfe and includes essays by Metcalfe and several other well-known activists. OUT looks at the emergence of Queer activism in Halifax. This catalogue is an expansion and reproduction of a very rare and out-of-print 1997 MSVU catalogue.
It features 2014 essays by Robin Metcalfe, Rebecca Rose, Beck Gilmer-Osborne, and Genevieve Flavelle. It also features the original 1997 essays by Jane Kansas, James McSwain, Robin Metcalfe, and an introduction by Ingrid Jenkner.
Jane Kansas reflects on coming out as lesbian in rural Nova Scotia, and James MacSwain contributes a film- and videography of local Queer cinematic production up until 1997. Contemporary activist Rebecca Rose traces a personal account of Queer activism in Halifax in the second decade of the 21st century, emphasising the growing visibility of trans activism within the Queer movement, and NSCAD Queer Collective’s Beck Gilmer-Osborne and Genevieve Flavelle share an account of their experience with the Collective and the Turret Resurrection project at the Khyber Centre for the Arts.
OUT: Queer Looking Queer Acting Revisited is at once a celebration of the past, an important social and historical documentation, and a passing of the proverbial baton.
For the month of March 2026, the Khyber is pledging 50% of revenues in support of the Take Back the Turret campaign.
